Lydia Gifford
Gifford’s practice explores the shifting boundary between painting and sculpture through a deeply tactile and process-driven approach. Working with oil paint and a wide range of textiles and supports, she builds surfaces marked by folding, layering, stretching and accumulation. Her works retain the physical traces of their making, becoming intimate records of touch, tension and time.
Recent solo exhibitions include L’Art dans les Chapelles, Brittany; Undercurrent at Tristan Hoare, London; Frictions at L21 Gallery, Palma; Low Anchored Cloud at Alma Pearl, London; and Poreuse at Gilles Drouault Galerie, Paris. Previous institutional solo exhibitions include BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Kunsthaus Baselland, Centre International d’Art et du Paysage, and David Roberts Art Foundation.
Her work has been presented at institutions including Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, GAMeC Bergamo, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Magasin CNAC Grenoble and MOSTYN.
Gifford’s work is held in collections including Kunsthaus Zürich, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Jumex Foundation, KADIST, FRAC Auvergne and Lafayette Anticipations.
