Álvaro Gil

Álvaro Gil (Corella, 1986)  holds a degree in Fine Arts and a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Art Research and Creation from the University of the Basque Country. As part of this advanced research, he developed a doctoral project focused on popular customisation and transformative constructions at the margins of art.

His practice questions the separation between high and low culture through sculptures and constructions based on customisation, recycling, assembly, and DIY processes. Working from an attitude of non-consumption, Gil transforms familiar objects and materials through the addition of custom-made structures or casings. These interventions give them a new value that is both formally refined and conceptually critical. His process-based approach brings together functionality and aesthetics, resulting in complex artefacts whose forms and uses remain deliberately ambiguous.

Since 2008, he has presented solo exhibitions at institutions and galleries including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Sala Rekalde, Centro Huarte, Museo de Navarra, L21, Ponce+Robles, and Galería Satélite in Querétaro.

His work has also been presented at international art fairs and exhibitions including ARCO Madrid, Material Art Fair in Mexico City, KIAF Plus Seoul, and Art Cologne Palma.
